Join us for an evening of conversation and community in partnership with Rose Cafe! Meet readers from across the city and form connections across differences. The book we'll be discussing is The Two Lives of Sara. Plus, meet the author, Chicago's-own Catherine Adel West!
Named a Most Anticipated Book of 2022 by Ms. Magazine, The Root, Popsugar, Bustle, and many more!
In 1960s Memphis, a young mother finds refuge in a boardinghouse where family encompasses more than just blood and hidden truths can bury you or set you free.
Sara King has nothing, save for her secrets and the baby in her belly, as she boards the bus to Memphis, hoping to outrun her past in Chicago. She is welcomed with open arms by Mama Sugar, a kindly matriarch and owner of the popular boardinghouse The Scarlet Poplar.
With a charismatic cast of characters, The Two Lives of Sara is an emotional and unforgettable story of hope, the limitations of resilience and unexpected love.
Rose Café is a bookstore opening in the Roseland neighborhood on the far South Side of Chicago. We believe access to literacy will provide pathways to opportunities and reduce community based violence. Our mission is to increase book ownership and cultivate a safe community space to read, work, and exchange ideas.
100% of ticket sales will go towards Rose Cafe’s book donation program: an effort to dismantle the book desert in the Roseland neighborhood.
Please arrive 15 minutes early to check in with our staff + choose your table (first come, first serve!). Book club will begin promptly at its scheduled time. After the event, all guests will receive a 10% discount on retail purchases.
Our space is located at 847 W. Randolph St. Book club will be held in our separate event space that currently accommodates 30 guests with 6 feet between tables. Our team will be masked. While most of our tables are for two and four guests, we do have a few single seats available for this special event. Single guests will be seated with another single guest, who may be unmasked at a close distance - we recommend following CDC guidelines and only participating if fully vaccinated for Covid-19 and/or low risk. Masks will be required upon entry + can only be removed when seated at your table.
Parking in the West Loop can be difficult - we recommend public transportation (near the Morgan Green Line) or ridesharing. When using Uber or another rideshare app: please double-check that the address is correct - 847 W Randolph! Some of these apps have been delayed in updating new our new business location, and you may end up at our 2018 location if you add your destination by name.
We cannot offer refunds for event purchases. See you soon!
