we're passionate about the science of skincare
scratch goods began out of a personal need for simple, affordable skincare. co-founders and high school friends maureen + elizabeth realized that while they were eating clean and local, their personal care products were still coming from the drugstore and laden with fragrances + unnecessary junk - and they weren't really working. in an attempt to simplify their routines and calm their irritated skin, they slowly purged everything with potential irritants, and didn't have much left.
drawing on maureen's chemistry background and their love for locally-grown ingredients, they rebuilt their own skincare from scratch, in elizabeth's chicago apartment kitchen. starting simple with natural soaps, scrubs and oils sourced from their community garden and local farms, their skin rebounded and thrived. their requirements for product development remain the same today: quality, food-grade ingredients that are safe enough to eat, and simple formulas that don't rely on intense preservatives or stabilizers.
they moved their home operation + etsy shop into a real brick-and-mortar shop in 2015, which gave space for scratch goods to grow into an experience as well as a product line: the interactive mask bar was born in 2016, guiding customers through the steps and techniques for using their goods at home. in 2017, the shop moved to a larger space to hold a mask bar of 6 people at a time, plus wellness classes to connect with the community. their current space on randolph street in the west loop of chicago has an expanded retail section, a 10-seat mask bar, and an event space for private mask parties and lots more wellness programming.
and then we entered a pandemic! with in-person events and shopping off the table, scratch goods pivoted to online sales only + turned the mask bar into a virtual experience. guests can now book private zoom gatherings with their friends and a scratch goods instructor, following along at home with a full kit of skincare mailed to their door ahead of time. we so appreciate the community's commitment to supporting small businesses through this time, and can't wait to see you all again on the other side - we're confident we'll be there!
