we're passionate about the science of skincare
scratch goods began out of a personal need for simple, natural, affordable skincare. co-founders maureen and elizabeth, high school friends now living in chicago, realized that while they were eating clean, their personal care products were still laden with questionable ingredients. knowing that 70% of what is applied to our skin is absorbed into our bodies, they slowly purged from their homes everything containing parabens, sulfates, pthalates, synthetic fragrances, + dyes.
replacing these items was much more difficult - truly natural products were hard to find, and often came with high price tags. so they rebuilt their own personal care regimen from scratch, in elizabeth's apartment kitchen. their requirements for product development remain the same today: food-grade ingredients that are safe enough to eat, fragrance from pure essential oils only, and zero water, eliminating the need for synthetic preservatives.
they opened their first brick-and-mortar shop in roscoe village in 2015, which gave space for scratch goods to grow into an experience as well as a product line: a self-service mask bar was born in 2016, guiding customers through the steps and techniques for using their all-natural goods at home. the next chapter took the brand to the fulton market neighborhood, where the mask bar grew to hold 6 people at a time and wellness classes were added to the offerings. their move to randolph street in 2018 has been a breath a fresh air - with extra space for an expanded retail selection, a 10-seat mask bar, lots of wellness programming, and private parties. they're currently open 7 days a week at 843 w. randolph - stop in to shop the goods, grab a hot tea, or jump into a wellness class. see you there!
